Ingredients

  • 2 cans 14.5 oz each diced tomatoes (or 4 large fresh tomatoes)
  • 1 1/2 cups breadcrumbs fresh or dried
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder optional
  • 1/4 tsp paprika for color

Instructions

Preheat the Oven

  • Set your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease your baking dish.

Cook the Tomatoes

  • In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until soft. Then add diced tomatoes, sugar, salt, and pepper. Let the mixture simmer for 5–7 minutes until slightly thickened.

Add Breadcrumbs

  • Stir in about half of the breadcrumbs. Mix until it becomes a thick, chunky blend.

Pour and Top

  • Pour the tomato mixture into the baking dish. Sprinkle the remaining breadcrumbs evenly on top. Add a few small dots of butter for extra flavor.

Bake

  • Bake uncovered for 20–25 minutes or until the top turns golden brown and crispy.

Serve Warm

  • Let it cool slightly before serving. It’s best enjoyed warm and fresh out of the oven.

Notes

  • Use fresh tomatoes for a brighter, fresher taste.
  • Add a pinch of Italian seasoning for extra flavor.
  • Try mixing in a handful of shredded cheese for a richer dish.
  • Don’t skip the butter — it adds that golden, crisp top.
  • You can use crushed crackers instead of breadcrumbs for a crunchier bite.
