Ingredients

  • 2 cans of French onion soup about 10.5 oz each
  • 1 cup water or beef broth
  • 4 slices French bread or baguette
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • 1 tablespoon butter optional
  • Black pepper to taste
  • Fresh thyme optional, for garnish

Instructions

Heat the Soup

  • Pour canned soup and water (or broth) into a saucepan. Heat on medium flame until it starts to simmer.

Add Butter and Pepper

  • Stir in butter and a pinch of black pepper for extra flavor. Let it simmer for 5 minutes.

Prepare the Bread

  • Toast the bread slices until golden and crispy. You can use a toaster or broil in the oven.

Assemble the Soup

  • Pour hot soup into oven-safe bowls. Place one toasted bread slice on top of each bowl.

Add Cheese

  • Sprinkle shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese over the bread. Make sure it covers the top completely.

Broil Until Golden

  • Place the bowls under the oven broiler for 2–3 minutes. Heat until the cheese melts and turns golden brown.

Serve Hot

  • Carefully remove from the oven. Sprinkle with fresh thyme if you like. Serve immediately while bubbly and hot.

Notes

  • Use beef broth instead of water for a richer flavor.
  • Toast the bread well so it stays crispy under the cheese.
  • Try adding a splash of Worcestershire sauce for depth.
  • Use Gruyère or Swiss cheese for authentic flavor.
  • Broil only a few minutes to avoid burning the cheese.
