Ingredients

  • 4 cups fresh broccoli florets
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ cup crushed buttery crackers

Instructions

Prepare the Broccoli

  • Wash the broccoli well. Cut into small florets. Boil in salted water for three minutes. Drain quickly and set aside. Do not overcook. The broccoli should stay bright green and slightly firm.

Make the Cheese Sauce

  • Melt butter in a pot over medium heat. Add flour and whisk until smooth paste forms. Slowly pour in milk and cream. Stir constantly until thick and creamy with no lumps.

Add Cheese and Seasoning

  • Turn heat to low. Add shredded cheddar cheese slowly. Stir until melted fully. Add garlic powder, salt and black pepper. Mix well until the sauce becomes smooth and rich.

Combine Broccoli and Sauce

  • Place cooked broccoli into a large bowl. Pour the warm cheese sauce over it. Gently mix until every piece of broccoli is covered with creamy cheese sauce evenly.

Transfer to Baking Dish

  • Grease a baking dish lightly with butter. Pour the broccoli mixture into the dish. Spread it evenly using a spoon so it cooks the same on all sides.

Add Cracker Topping

  • Sprinkle crushed buttery crackers evenly on top. This gives a crispy golden layer. It adds nice texture and flavor to the soft and creamy casserole.

Bake the Casserole

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 25–30 minutes. The top should turn golden brown and slightly crispy. Let it rest five minutes before serving warm.

Notes

  • Use fresh broccoli for better taste and texture.
  • Do not overcook broccoli before baking.
  • Shred cheese at home for smooth melting.
  • Stir sauce constantly to avoid lumps.
  • Let casserole rest before serving.
