Ingredients

  • 1 pound fresh green beans trimmed
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes optional
  • 2 slices bacon cooked and crumbled (optional but tasty)

Instructions

Prepare the Green Beans

  • Wash the green beans under cold water. Trim both ends using a knife. Cut them into halves if they are very long. Set them aside while preparing the other ingredients.

Cook the Bacon

  • Place a pot over medium heat. Cook the bacon slices until crispy and golden. Remove them and place on paper towels. Keep a little bacon fat in the pot for extra flavor.

Sauté Onion and Garlic

  • Add butter to the same pot. Add chopped onion and cook until soft and clear. Stir in minced garlic. Cook for one minute until fragrant but not brown.

Add Green Beans and Broth

  • Put the green beans into the pot. Pour in the chicken broth. Stir well so everything mixes nicely. Season with salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes if using.

Simmer Until Tender

  • Cover the pot with a lid. Let the green beans cook on low heat for about 20 minutes. Stir sometimes to prevent sticking and to cook evenly.

Finish and Serve

  • When beans are soft and tender, remove the lid. Let extra liquid cook off if needed. Sprinkle crumbled bacon on top. Taste and adjust seasoning before serving warm.

Notes

  • Use fresh green beans for best flavor and texture.
  • Do not overcook or they will become mushy.
  • Add a splash of lemon juice for brightness.
  • Use vegetable broth for a vegetarian version.
  • Stir occasionally to prevent burning.
