Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 5 medium potatoes thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

Prepare the oven

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F. Grease your baking dish lightly with butter or oil to prevent sticking.

Cook the ground beef

  • Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it into small pieces while cooking.

Add onion and spices

  • Stir in chopped onion, salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder and onion powder. Cook until onion softens and smells fragrant.

Slice the potatoes

  • Wash potatoes well and slice them thin. Thin slices help them cook evenly and become soft and tender inside.

Layer the potatoes

  • Place half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish. Spread them evenly so the whole bottom is fully covered.

Add beef layer

  • Add the cooked beef mixture on top of the potatoes. Spread it out smoothly so each bite gets tasty meat.

Make the creamy sauce

  • Mix cream of mushroom soup and milk in a bowl. Stir until the sauce looks smooth and fully blended.

Pour sauce over beef

  • Pour the creamy soup mixture over the beef layer. Make sure it spreads into corners and coats everything well.

Add remaining potatoes

  • Place the rest of the sliced potatoes on top. Try to keep layers even so the casserole bakes and cooks evenly.

Add cheese and butter

  • Sprinkle cheddar cheese over the top and add small butter pieces. This makes the top golden, rich and extra creamy.

Bake the casserole

  • Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake 15 minutes more until potatoes are tender.

Rest and serve

  • Let the casserole rest for ten minutes before serving. This helps it set and keeps slices neat and beautiful when plated.

Notes

  • Slice potatoes very thin for faster cooking
  • You can use sweet potatoes for a fun twist
  • Add corn or peas for more color and flavor
  • Use pepper jack cheese if you like spice
  • Lean beef makes the dish lighter
  • Resting time helps the casserole hold shape
