Ingredients

For the Pastry:

  • 2 sheets puff pastry thawed
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

For the Apple Filling:

  • 2 cups peeled and diced apples
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

For the Vanilla Glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Prepare the Apple Filling

  • In a small saucepan, combine diced apples, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon and lemon juice. Cook over medium heat for five minutes until apples soften slightly. Stir in cornstarch and cook until thick.

Roll the Puff Pastry

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Place puff pastry on a floured surface. Roll gently to smooth edges. Transfer to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Add the Filling

  • Spread cooled apple filling down the center of the pastry lengthwise. Leave space on the edges. Do not overfill, or it may leak while baking.

Shape the Kringle

  • Cut small strips along both sides of the pastry. Fold strips over the filling in a crisscross pattern. This creates a braided look. Brush top with melted butter.

Bake the Pastry

  • Place baking sheet in preheated oven. Bake for 20–25 minutes until golden brown and puffed. Remove from oven and cool slightly before glazing.

Make the Vanilla Glaze

  • In a bowl, whisk powdered sugar, milk and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth and creamy. Adjust milk for desired thickness.

Glaze and Serve

  • Drizzle vanilla glaze over warm kringle. Let glaze set for ten minutes. Slice and serve while slightly warm for best flavor.

Notes

  • Use firm apples like Granny Smith for best texture.
  • Let filling cool before adding to pastry.
  • Do not skip cornstarch. It thickens the filling.
  • Chill pastry briefly if it becomes too soft.
  • Add chopped nuts for extra crunch.
