Italian pepper cookies are unique, bold and full of tradition. They are crunchy cookies made with black pepper and warm spices.

Ingredients
  

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp ground black pepper
  • ½ tsp ground cloves
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • ½ cup warm milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Optional glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 –3 tbsp milk
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

Instructions
 

Step 1: Mix Dry Ingredients

  • In a large bowl, mix flour, cocoa, sugar, baking powder, pepper, cloves, cinnamon and salt.

Step 2: Add Wet Ingredients

  • In another bowl, whisk eggs, oil, milk and vanilla. Pour into dry mix. Stir until dough forms.

Step 3: Shape the Dough

  • Form small logs or round cookies. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Step 4: Bake

  • Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 12–15 minutes until firm.

Step 5: Optional Glaze

  • Mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla. Dip cooled cookies or drizzle glaze on top.

Notes

  • Enjoy with espresso or cappuccino.
  • Serve after dinner with red wine.
  • Pack in boxes as holiday gifts.
  • Keep in an airtight container for 1 week.
