  • Milk – 2 cups
  • Eggs – 4 large
  • Sugar – 1 cup
  • Vanilla Extract – 1 teaspoon
  • Ground Cinnamon – 1 teaspoon
  • Ground Nutmeg – ½ teaspoon
  • Raisins – ½ cup
  • Rum optional – 2 tablespoons
  • Butter – 4 tablespoons melted
  • Salt – ¼ teaspoon

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare Your Ingredients

  • Collect all the necessary ingredients.
  • Place them on your workspace.
  • Cube the stale bread into bite-sized pieces.

Step 2: Soak the Bread

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine milk, sugar, eggs, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  • Whisk until well combined.
  • Add the cubed bread to the bowl.
  • Gently press the bread to soak up the liquid.
  • Allow it to rest for half an hour to soak up the flavors.

Step 3: Preheat the Oven

  • Prepare your oven, setting it to 350°F (175°C) temperature.

Step 4: Add Raisins and Rum

  • Pour rum over the soaked bread mixture, if using.
  • Stir in the raisins.
  • Make sure they are evenly spread.

Step 5: Prepare the Baking Dish

  • Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter.
  • Pour the bread mixture into the dish.
  • Spread it out evenly.

Step 6: Bake the Pudding

  • Place the dish in the preheated oven.
  • Bake for 45-50 minutes.
  • The surface should boast a luscious golden hue, signifying the pudding's firmness.
  • Check the center with a knife; it should emerge clean.
  • Shield the top with foil if it browns too rapidly.

Step 7: Cool and Serve

  • Remove the dish from the oven.
  • Let the pudding cool slightly on a cooling rack.
  • Serve warm.
  • Optionally, drizzle with caramel sauce.
  • Enhance with a dollop of whipped cream or a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Notes

  • Use stale bread: It absorbs the liquid better.
  • Soak the bread: Let it sit in the milk mixture for a while.
  • Add spices: Cinnamon and nutmeg are key.
  • Don’t skip the raisins: They add great sweetness.
  • Bake until golden: The top should be a nice brown color.
