Ingredients

  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup melted butter
  • 1/4 cup sour cream

Instructions

Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Grease your baking dish or skillet lightly. This helps prevent sticking and gives a nice crust.

Mix Dry Ingredients

  • In a large bowl, add cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Mix well using a whisk so everything is evenly combined.

Prepare Wet Ingredients

  • In another bowl, add milk, eggs, melted butter and sour cream. Whisk until smooth and creamy. This mixture gives moisture and richness.

Combine the Mixtures

  • Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients. Stir gently until combined. Do not overmix. The batter should be slightly thick but smooth.

Pour into Baking Dish

  • Pour the batter into your prepared dish or skillet. Spread it evenly using a spatula so it bakes evenly on all sides.

Bake the Cornbread

  • Place the dish in the oven. Bake for 18–22 minutes. The top should turn golden and a toothpick should come out clean.

Check for Doneness

  • Insert a toothpick in the center. If it comes out clean, your cornbread is ready. If not, bake for a few more minutes.

Let It Cool

  • Remove from the oven and let it cool for 5–10 minutes. This helps the cornbread set and makes slicing easier.

Slice and Serve

  • Cut into squares or wedges. Serve warm for the best taste. The inside will be soft and fluffy.

Enjoy Your Cornbread

  • Serve with butter or honey on top. Enjoy your homemade cornbread with your favorite meal or as a snack.

Notes

  • Use fresh cornmeal for better flavor
  • Do not overmix the batter
  • Use a cast iron skillet for crispy edges
  • Add a little honey for extra sweetness
  • Let it cool slightly before cutting
