Ingredients

  • 8 slices thick bread brioche or Texas toast works well
  • 3 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter for cooking
  • Maple syrup for serving
  • Powdered sugar for topping optional
  • Fresh berries for garnish optional

Instructions

Prepare the Egg Mixture

  • Crack the eggs into a large mixing bowl. Add milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon and salt. Whisk everything together until the mixture becomes smooth, creamy and well combined.

Heat the Pan

  • Place a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add a small amount of butter. Let the butter melt slowly and coat the surface of the pan evenly.

Dip the Bread

  • Pour the egg mixture into a shallow dish. Dip one slice of bread into the mixture. Let each side soak for a few seconds.

Cook the First Side

  • Place the soaked bread slice onto the hot skillet. Cook it for about two to three minutes. The bottom should turn golden brown and slightly crisp.

Flip and Cook Again

  • Use a spatula to carefully flip the bread slice. Cook the second side for another two minutes. The bread should look golden and smell delicious.

Repeat the Process

  • Continue dipping and cooking the remaining bread slices. Add more butter to the skillet if needed. This helps the French toast stay golden and flavorful.

Serve the French Toast

  • Place the cooked slices on a serving plate. Sprinkle powdered sugar on top if you like. Serve warm with maple syrup and fresh berries.

Notes

  • Use thick bread slices for better texture.
  • Slightly stale bread works best for French toast.
  • Do not soak the bread too long or it may break.
  • Cook on medium heat to avoid burning.
  • Add a little nutmeg for extra flavor.
  • Use brioche bread for a richer taste.
