Ingredients

  • 12 lasagna noodles
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound ground Italian sausage
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 cans 28 ounces each crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes optional
  • 2 cups ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Fresh basil for garnish

Instructions

Cook the Noodles

  • Boil lasagna noodles in salted water until al dente. Drain and lay flat on a baking sheet to prevent sticking.

Prepare the Meat Sauce

  • Heat olive oil in a skillet. Add onion and garlic, cook until soft. Add ground beef and sausage. Cook until browned, stirring often.

Add Tomatoes and Seasoning

  • Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, basil, oregano, salt, pepper and red pepper flakes. Simmer on low for 20 minutes to blend flavors.

Prepare the Ricotta Mixture

  • In a bowl, mix ricotta cheese with egg, a pinch of salt and a little pepper. Stir until creamy and smooth.

Assemble the Lasagna

  • Spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom of the baking dish. Layer noodles, ricotta mixture, mozzarella and meat sauce. Repeat layers until all ingredients are used.

Top with Cheese

  • Finish with a layer of noodles, meat sauce and shredded mozzarella. Sprinkle grated Parmesan on top. Cover with foil.

Bake the Lasagna

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake covered for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 25 minutes until cheese is golden and bubbly.

Serve and Garnish

  • Let the lasagna rest for 10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh basil. Serve warm for best taste.

Notes

  • Use fresh herbs for stronger flavor
  • Let lasagna rest before cutting for cleaner slices
  • Do not overcook noodles; they will bake in the oven
  • Use high-quality cheese for best results
  • Add a pinch of nutmeg to ricotta for extra depth
