Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar optional
  • ¾ cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil for dough
  • cups vegetable oil for frying

Optional toppings:

  • Honey
  • Powdered sugar
  • Cinnamon sugar
  • Refried beans
  • Shredded cheese

Instructions

Mix the Dry Ingredients

  • Add flour, baking powder, salt and sugar to a large bowl. Mix them well with a spoon. This step ensures all dry ingredients are evenly combined.

Make the Dough

  • Add warm water and one tablespoon oil to the bowl. Mix everything slowly until a soft dough forms. The dough should feel smooth and slightly soft.

Knead the Dough

  • Place the dough on a lightly floured surface. Knead it gently for about three minutes. This helps develop the texture and makes the dough smooth.

Rest the Dough

  • Cover the dough with a clean cloth. Let it rest for ten minutes. This step relaxes the dough and makes shaping easier.

Divide the Dough

  • Divide the dough into six equal pieces. Roll each piece into a small ball. This helps create evenly sized fry breads.

Shape the Bread

  • Use your hands or a rolling pin to flatten each dough ball. Make small round circles about half an inch thick.

Heat the Oil

  • Pour frying oil into a skillet. Heat it over medium heat. The oil should be hot but not smoking.

Fry the Bread

  • Carefully place one dough circle into the hot oil. Fry for about one minute on each side until golden brown.

Drain the Bread

  • Remove the fry bread using tongs. Place it on paper towels to remove extra oil. Repeat with remaining dough pieces.

Serve and Enjoy

  • Serve the fry bread warm. Add sweet toppings like honey or powdered sugar. You can also add savory toppings like beans and cheese.

Notes

  • Let the dough rest for softer bread.
  • Do not make the dough too sticky.
  • Fry one piece at a time for best results.
  • Use medium heat to avoid burning the bread.
  • Serve the bread warm for the best taste.
