Ingredients

For the Pastry

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup cold butter cubed
  • 1 egg for brushing
  • 6 tbsp cold water

For the Filling

  • 1 cup ground beef
  • 1 medium potato diced
  • 1 small carrot diced
  • ½ small onion chopped
  • 1 tbsp flour
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • ½ tsp thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • ¼ cup water

Instructions

Prepare the Filling

  • Heat oil in a pan. Add chopped onions and cook until soft. Add ground beef and stir until browned.
  • Mix in diced potatoes and carrots. Cook for 5 minutes. Add thyme, salt, and pepper. Stir in flour to thicken. Add water and cook for 10 minutes until the mix thickens. Let it cool.

Make the Dough

  • In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt. Add butter cubes. Rub with your fingers until it looks like breadcrumbs.
  • Add cold water little by little. Mix until a smooth dough forms. Wrap it and chill for 10 minutes.

Shape the Pies

  • Roll out the dough on a floured surface. Cut circles using a round cutter or small bowl. Place a spoon of filling in the center. Fold the dough in half and seal the edges with a fork.

Bake the Pies

  • Place the pies on a greased baking tray. Brush the tops with beaten egg. Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for 25–30 minutes or until golden brown.

Cool and Serve

  • Remove from the oven and let them cool for 5 minutes. Serve warm and enjoy the crispy crust with the soft filling inside.

Notes

  • Use cold butter for a flaky crust.
  • Do not overfill the pies.
  • Let the filling cool before adding to dough.
  • You can add peas or bell peppers for extra flavor.
  • For a golden shine, brush the pies with egg before baking.
