Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup butter softened
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 2 teaspoons orange zest

For the Frosting:

  • 1 cup butter softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional: orange food coloring

Instructions

Preheat the Oven

  • Set oven to 350°F. Grease and line two 9-inch cake pans. This prevents sticking.

Mix Dry Ingredients

  • Combine flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in a large bowl. Stir evenly.

Combine Wet Ingredients

  • In another bowl, beat eggs, milk, butter, orange juice and vanilla until smooth.

Mix Wet and Dry Together

  • Add wet ingredients to dry mix slowly. Stir gently until batter is smooth and uniform.

Add Orange Zest

  • Fold in orange zest. It gives the cake a bright, natural citrus flavor.

Pour Batter into Pans

  • Divide batter evenly between two prepared pans. Smooth the top with a spatula.

Bake the Cake

  • Bake for 25–30 minutes. Insert a toothpick; it should come out clean.

Cool the Cake

  • Remove cakes from oven. Let them cool in pans for 10 minutes. Then transfer to a rack.

Prepare the Frosting

  • Beat butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, orange juice and vanilla. Mix well.

Frost the Cake

  • Place one cake layer on plate. Spread frosting evenly. Place second layer on top. Frost sides and top.

Optional: Add Color

  • Add a few drops of orange food color to frosting. Mix until you get desired shade.

Chill Before Serving

  • Refrigerate cake for 30 minutes. This helps frosting set and flavors blend.

Notes

  • Use fresh orange juice for stronger flavor.
  • Do not overmix the batter; it keeps cake soft.
  • Let cake layers cool before frosting to avoid melting.
  • Optional: sprinkle orange zest on top for decoration.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge for best freshness.
