Ingredients

  • 1 pound calamari rings and tentacles
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup cornmeal optional for extra crunch
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 lemon cut into wedges
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

Clean the calamari

  • Rinse the calamari under cold water. Pat dry with paper towels to remove moisture.

Mix the coating

  • In a bowl, mix flour, cornmeal, salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder. Stir well.

Coat the calamari

  • Add the calamari rings into the flour mix. Toss until each piece is coated evenly.

Heat the oil

  • Pour oil into a large frying pan. Heat it over medium-high heat until hot.

Fry the calamari

  • Place the coated calamari in the hot oil in small batches. Don’t overcrowd the pan.

Cook until golden

  • Fry each side for about 1–2 minutes until golden brown and crispy.

Drain the oil

  • Remove the calamari with tongs. Place on paper towels to soak excess oil.

Add lemon flavor

  • Squeeze fresh lemon juice on top for a bright, fresh flavor.

Serve and enjoy

  • Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce or a sprinkle of parsley.

Notes

  • Always dry the calamari before coating to make it crispier.
  • Don’t overcook it. Calamari gets tough if cooked too long.
  • Try adding chili flakes or cayenne for a spicy version.
  • Use fresh oil for the best flavor and texture.
  • You can also use rice flour for a gluten-free option.
