Ingredients

For the bread pudding:

  • 1 loaf French bread cut into cubes
  • 4 cups milk
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ cup melted butter

For the sauce:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • ½ cup butter
  • 1 egg beaten
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions

Prepare the Bread

  • Cut the French bread into cubes and place them in a buttered baking dish. Use day-old bread if possible. It soaks the custard better.

Make the Custard Mix

  • In a large bowl, whisk together milk, sugar, eggs, vanilla, cinnamon, and melted butter. Mix until smooth and creamy.

Soak the Bread

  • Pour the milk mixture over the bread cubes. Press the bread down lightly with a spoon so it absorbs the custard. Let it rest for 10 minutes.

Bake the Pudding

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the pudding for 40 to 45 minutes. The top should be golden brown and slightly crisp.

Prepare the Sauce

  • While the pudding bakes, make the sweet sauce. In a small pan, melt butter and sugar together on low heat. Stir until smooth. Slowly add the beaten egg while stirring fast. Cook for 2 minutes, then remove from heat. Stir in vanilla extract.

Serve Warm

  • Once the pudding is done, pour the warm sauce over the top. Serve it hot for the best taste.

Notes

  • Use stale bread, not fresh. It helps soak the custard better.
  • Always let the bread rest in the milk mix before baking.
  • Add raisins, nuts, or even chocolate chips for extra flavor.
  • Don’t overbake it. The center should stay soft.
  • Drizzle the warm sauce right before serving for the perfect finish.
