Ingredients

  • 6 cups peeled and sliced apples about 6 medium apples
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup unsalted butter softened
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • Optional: Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for serving

Instructions

Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish. This prevents sticking and makes clean-up easy.

Prepare the Apples

  • Peel and slice the apples evenly. Place them in a large mixing bowl. Add granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and lemon juice. Toss well to coat all slices.

Make the Topping

  • In another bowl, mix oats, brown sugar, flour, salt and softened butter. Use a fork or your hands to combine. The mixture should be crumbly and slightly chunky.

Assemble the Crisp

  • Spread the coated apples evenly in the greased baking dish. Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apples. Make sure the apples are fully covered for a golden top.

Bake the Apple Crisp

  • Place the dish in the preheated oven. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 40–45 minutes. The topping should be golden brown. Apples should be tender when pierced with a fork.

Cool and Serve

  • Remove the apple crisp carefully from the oven. Let it cool for 5–10 minutes. Serve warm. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream if desired.

Notes

  • Use tart apples like Granny Smith for the best flavor.
  • Cut apples evenly for uniform cooking.
  • Use cold butter for a crispier topping.
  • Add chopped nuts for extra crunch.
  • Sprinkle a little extra cinnamon on top before baking.
  • Serve immediately for best texture; topping can soften over time.
