Ingredients
  

  • 1 whole chicken 3–4 lbs, cut into pieces
  • 8 cups chicken broth
  • 1 large onion chopped
  • 3 carrots sliced
  • 3 celery stalks sliced
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 4 tablespoons butter melted

Instructions
 

Cook the Chicken

  • Place chicken pieces in a large pot with chicken broth. Add chopped onion, carrots, and celery. Season with salt, pepper and thyme. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 30 minutes.

Prepare the Dumpling Dough

  • In a mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt. Add milk and melted butter. Stir until a soft dough forms. Do not overmix. The dough should be slightly sticky.

Remove Chicken and Shred

  • Take chicken pieces out of the pot. Let them cool slightly. Remove skin and bones. Shred the meat into bite-sized pieces. Set aside while broth continues to simmer.

Add Chicken Back to Broth

  • Return shredded chicken to the pot. Stir gently to combine. Keep the broth simmering on low heat. Make sure vegetables are soft and flavorful.

Drop Dumplings Into Broth
