Ingredients

For the Crust:

  • 1 pre-made pie crust 9-inch or homemade
  • 1 tablespoon sugar optional

For the Chocolate Filling:

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 3 large egg yolks lightly beaten
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Whipped Topping:

  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Prepare the Pie Crust

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the pie crust in a 9-inch pie pan. Prick the bottom with a fork. Bake for 10 minutes. Let it cool before filling.

Mix Dry Ingredients

  • In a medium saucepan, whisk together sugar, cocoa powder, cornstarch and salt. Make sure there are no lumps. This ensures smooth chocolate filling later.

Add Milk and Heat

  • Slowly whisk in the milk. Place the saucepan over medium heat. Stir constantly to prevent lumps. Heat until mixture starts to thicken, about 5–7 minutes.

Temper the Egg Yolks

  • Gradually add a small amount of hot chocolate mixture into egg yolks while whisking. Slowly pour yolks back into saucepan. Stir well to avoid scrambling the eggs.

Cook the Filling

  • Continue cooking the mixture on medium heat. Stir constantly until thick and creamy, about 2–3 minutes. Remove from heat and add butter and vanilla extract. Stir until smooth.

Fill the Pie Crust

  • Pour chocolate filling into the baked pie crust. Spread evenly with a spatula. Let it cool to room temperature before adding whipped cream topping.

Make the Whipped Cream

  • In a mixing bowl, beat heavy cream, powdered sugar and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form. Use an electric mixer or whisk by hand.

Top the Pie

  • Spread whipped cream evenly over chocolate filling. Garnish with chocolate shavings, cocoa powder or extra chocolate chips if desired.

Chill the Pie

  • Place the pie in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours. Chilling helps the filling set and flavors combine. Serve cold for best taste.

Serve and Enjoy

  • Cut the pie into slices. Serve on plates with a fork. Enjoy the creamy, chocolatey goodness of Pioneer Woman Chocolate Pie Recipe.

Notes

  • Use high-quality cocoa powder for the best chocolate flavor.
  • Chill the pie for at least two hours for firm filling.
  • Whipped cream can be sweetened to taste.
  • Toasted nuts or chocolate shavings make great garnish.
  • Avoid overheating the filling to prevent curdling eggs.
