Ingredients

  • 3 pounds russet potatoes peeled and cut into chunks
  • 4 tablespoons butter room temperature
  • ½ cup heavy cream warmed
  • ½ cup whole milk warmed
  • 1 teaspoon salt adjust to taste
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper optional
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder optional

Instructions

Peel and Cut Potatoes

  • Peel the potatoes and cut them into even chunks. This helps them cook evenly and mash smoothly.

Boil the Potatoes

  • Place potato chunks in a large pot. Cover with cold water and add 1 teaspoon salt.

Cook Until Tender

  • Bring water to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer 15–20 minutes. Potatoes are ready when soft.

Drain the Potatoes

  • Drain water using a colander. Shake gently to remove extra water.

Mash the Potatoes

  • Return potatoes to the pot. Use a masher or hand mixer to mash until smooth.

Add Butter

  • Add 4 tablespoons butter to hot potatoes. Stir well until fully melted and incorporated.

Mix in Cream and Milk

  • Slowly add warm cream and milk. Stir until the potatoes are creamy and smooth.

Season to Taste

  • Add salt, pepper, and garlic powder if desired. Mix well and taste. Adjust seasoning as needed.

Serve Warm

  • Transfer mashed potatoes to a serving bowl. Serve immediately while hot and creamy.

Notes

  • Use russet potatoes for the creamiest texture.
  • Warm cream and milk before adding to keep potatoes hot.
  • Don’t overmix, or potatoes become gluey.
  • Add garlic powder or roasted garlic for extra flavor.
  • You can prepare ahead and reheat gently on low heat.
