Ingredients

  • 1 loaf French bread cut into cubes
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

For Topping:

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold butter cubed

Instructions

Prepare the Bread

  • Cut the French bread into cubes. Place them evenly in a greased baking dish. Make sure the bread is slightly dry. This helps absorb the custard mixture better.

Mix the Custard

  • In a large bowl, whisk eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon and salt. Mix until smooth. This mixture will soak into the bread and give rich flavor.

Combine Bread and Custard

  • Pour the custard mixture over the bread cubes. Press gently to soak all pieces. Cover the dish with foil. Place it in the fridge for at least 4 hours.

Make the Topping

  • In a bowl, mix flour, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt. Add cold butter cubes. Use your fingers to mix until crumbly. This topping gives a nice crunch.

Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the casserole from the fridge. Let it sit for 10 minutes. This helps it bake evenly.

Add the Topping

  • Sprinkle the prepared topping evenly over the soaked bread. Make sure it covers the surface well. This will create a golden crust when baked.

Bake the Casserole

  • Bake uncovered for 40–45 minutes. The top should be golden brown. The center should be set. Check with a knife. It should come out clean.

Cool and Serve

  • Remove from oven and let it cool for 5–10 minutes. Slice into portions. Serve warm with syrup or powdered sugar for best taste.

Notes

  • Use slightly stale bread for better texture
  • Do not skip chilling time
  • Add fresh fruits like berries for extra flavor
  • Adjust sugar level based on taste
  • Use real butter for best topping results
  • Cover with foil if the top browns too fast
