Ingredients

  • 1 ½ pounds fresh green beans trimmed
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 ½ cups crispy fried onions

Instructions

Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish. This prevents sticking and makes serving easier later.

Cook the Green Beans

  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add green beans and cook for five minutes. Drain them in a colander. Set aside to cool slightly.

Make the Cream Sauce

  • In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook until soft. Add garlic and cook for one minute until fragrant.

Add Flour

  • Sprinkle flour over the onion mixture. Stir well for one minute. This helps thicken the sauce and removes raw flour taste.

Add Milk and Cream

  • Slowly pour in milk and heavy cream. Stir constantly to avoid lumps. Cook until sauce thickens. It should look smooth and creamy.

Add Cheese and Seasoning

  • Add shredded cheddar cheese, salt and black pepper. Stir until cheese melts fully. The sauce should be rich and creamy.

Combine with Green Beans

  • Add cooked green beans into the skillet. Mix gently until beans are fully coated with the creamy sauce.

Transfer to Baking Dish

  • Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish. Spread evenly using a spoon. Make sure beans are covered with sauce.

Add Crispy Onions

  • Sprinkle crispy fried onions evenly on top. These will turn golden and crunchy during baking.

Bake the Casserole

  • Place the dish in the oven. Bake at 375°F for 25 to 30 minutes. The top should look golden brown and bubbly.

Rest Before Serving

  • Remove from oven carefully. Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving. This helps the sauce set properly.

Notes

  • Do not overcook green beans. They should stay slightly firm.
  • Use fresh cheese for better melting.
  • Add mushrooms for extra flavor.
  • Taste sauce before baking and adjust seasoning.
  • Add extra onions on top for more crunch.
