Ingredients
  

  • Cooked ham – 2 cups diced
  • Potatoes – 4 cups peeled and thinly sliced
  • Butter – 3 tablespoons
  • All-purpose flour – 3 tablespoons
  • Milk – 2 cups
  • Cheddar cheese – 2 cups shredded
  • Onion – 1 small finely chopped
  • Garlic – 2 cloves minced
  • Salt – 1 teaspoon
  • Black pepper – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Paprika – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Fresh parsley – 1 tablespoon chopped, optional

Instructions
 

Prepare the ingredients

  • Peel the potatoes and slice them thinly for even cooking. Dice the cooked ham into small cubes. Chop onion and mince garlic. Keep all ingredients ready before starting the cooking process.

Make the creamy sauce

  • Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add flour and whisk well. Cook for one minute. Slowly pour milk while whisking. Cook until thick. Add cheese, salt, pepper and paprika.

Layer the casserole

  • Grease a baking dish lightly. Add one layer of sliced potatoes. Add some ham, onion and garlic. Pour some sauce on top. Repeat layers until all ingredients are used evenly.

Bake until tender

  • Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F). Cover the dish with foil. Bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 15 minutes. The top should be golden and bubbling nicely.

Rest and serve

  • Take the casserole out of the oven carefully. Let it rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if you like. Serve warm and enjoy every creamy bite.
