Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper diced
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 can refrigerated biscuit dough 8 pieces

Instructions

Cook the Beef

  • Heat a large skillet on medium heat. Add ground beef and cook slowly. Break it into small pieces. Cook until browned fully. Drain extra fat to keep the dish light.

Add Onion and Pepper

  • Add chopped onion and bell pepper to the beef. Stir well and cook for five minutes. The vegetables should become soft and release a nice aroma while cooking.

Add Garlic and Sauce Base

  • Add minced garlic and cook for one minute. Now add ketchup, tomato paste, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir everything well so the mixture becomes smooth and rich.

Season the Filling

  • Add brown sugar, mustard, salt and black pepper. Mix again and let it simmer for five minutes. The sauce will thicken and coat the beef nicely.

Prepare Baking Dish

  • Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F). Lightly grease a baking dish. Pour the beef mixture into it. Spread evenly so every bite has balanced flavor and texture.

Add Biscuit Layer

  • Cut biscuit dough into small pieces. Place them evenly over the meat mixture. Leave small spaces between pieces so they cook evenly and become golden.

Add Cheese Topping

  • Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the biscuit layer. Cover all areas evenly. This helps create a gooey, cheesy top that melts beautifully during baking.

Bake the Casserole

  • Place the dish in the oven. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes. The biscuits should rise and turn golden brown. The cheese should melt and bubble nicely.

Rest and Serve

  • Remove from oven and let it rest for five minutes. This helps the casserole set properly. Serve warm and enjoy a comforting homemade sloppy joe bake.

Notes

  • Use lean ground beef for less grease
  • Add a pinch of chili powder for spice
  • Use sharp cheddar for stronger flavor
  • Do not overcook the biscuits
  • Let it rest before serving
  • Taste the sauce before baking
