Ingredients

  • pounds ground beef
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 1 small green bell pepper finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes optional
  • 6 hamburger buns
  • 2 tablespoons butter for toasting buns

Instructions

Cook the Ground Beef

  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef. Cook until browned. Break the meat with a spoon while cooking. Drain excess fat carefully.

Add the Vegetables

  • Add chopped onion and green bell pepper to the beef. Cook for about 5 minutes. Stir often until vegetables become soft and fragrant.

Add Garlic

  • Add minced garlic to the skillet. Cook for one minute only. Stir constantly to prevent burning. Garlic should smell fresh and aromatic.

Prepare the Sauce

  • In a small bowl, mix ketchup, tomato paste, mustard, Worcestershire sauce and brown sugar. Stir well until smooth and combined.

Combine Everything

  • Pour the sauce mixture into the skillet. Add salt, pepper, paprika and red pepper flakes. Stir everything together very well.

Simmer the Mixture

  • Reduce heat to low. Let the mixture simmer for 15 minutes. Stir occasionally. The sauce will thicken and coat the beef nicely.

Toast the Buns

  • Spread butter lightly on the inside of buns. Toast them in a pan until golden brown. This adds flavor and prevents soggy bread.

Assemble the Sloppy Joes

  • Spoon the beef mixture onto the bottom buns. Add a generous amount. Cover with top buns and serve immediately while hot.

Notes

  • Use 80/20 ground beef for best flavor.
  • Drain excess grease to avoid oily sandwiches.
  • Simmer longer if you want thicker sauce.
  • Add more brown sugar for sweeter taste.
  • Add hot sauce for extra spice.
  • Toast buns to keep them from getting soggy.
