Ingredients

  • Sweet potatoes peeled and cubed – 4 cups
  • Sugar – 1/2 cup
  • Brown sugar – 1/2 cup
  • Butter melted – 1/2 cup
  • Milk – 1/2 cup
  • Eggs – 2 large
  • Vanilla extract – 1 teaspoon
  • Cinnamon – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt – 1/4 teaspoon

For the topping:

  • Brown sugar – 1/2 cup
  • All-purpose flour – 1/3 cup
  • Butter cold, cubed – 1/3 cup
  • Chopped pecans – 1/2 cup

Instructions

Cook the Sweet Potatoes

  • Boil sweet potatoes in a large pot with water. Cook for 15 minutes until soft. Drain well and let them cool slightly before mashing.

Mash the Potatoes

  • Place cooked sweet potatoes in a bowl. Mash until smooth and creamy. Make sure there are no lumps for a soft texture.

Mix the Base

  • Add sugar, brown sugar, melted butter, milk, eggs, vanilla, cinnamon and salt. Mix everything well until smooth and creamy.

Prepare the Baking Dish

  • Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease your baking dish lightly. Pour the sweet potato mixture into the dish. Spread evenly using a spoon.

Make the Topping

  • In a bowl, mix brown sugar and flour. Add cold butter and mix until crumbly. Stir in chopped pecans for a crunchy topping.

Add the Topping

  • Sprinkle the topping evenly over the sweet potato layer. Make sure it covers the surface well for a nice crispy texture.

Bake the Casserole

  • Bake for 30 minutes until the top is golden brown. Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving. This helps the casserole set properly.

Notes

  • Use fresh sweet potatoes for best flavor.
  • Mash well to avoid lumps.
  • Add marshmallows if you like extra sweetness.
  • Use unsalted butter to control salt level.
  • Do not overbake to keep it moist.
  • Toast pecans for a deeper flavor.
