Ingredients

  • 2 pounds round steak
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 can 14.5 oz diced tomatoes
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme

Instructions

Prepare the Meat

  • Place the round steak on a cutting board. Use a meat tenderizer to pound it well. Make it thinner and softer. This step helps the meat cook evenly and become very tender.

Season and Coat

  • In a bowl, mix flour, salt, pepper and paprika. Coat each piece of steak in the flour mixture. Press lightly so the flour sticks well on both sides of the meat.

Brown the Steak

  • Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the steak pieces carefully. Brown them for about 3 minutes on each side. Remove them and set aside.

Cook the Vegetables

  • In the same skillet, add sliced onion and bell pepper. Cook for about 5 minutes until soft. Add minced garlic and cook for one more minute until fragrant.

Add Liquid Ingredients

  • Pour in diced tomatoes with juice and beef broth. Add Worcestershire sauce and dried thyme. Stir everything well. Let the mixture simmer for 3 to 4 minutes.

Combine and Simmer

  • Place the browned steak back into the skillet. Spoon some sauce over the meat. Cover the skillet with a lid. Lower the heat and simmer for 1 hour.

Check Tenderness

  • After one hour, check the meat with a fork. It should be very tender. If needed, cook for another 15 to 20 minutes until soft and juicy.

Serve Warm

  • Turn off the heat. Let the dish rest for 5 minutes. Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice or buttered noodles.

Notes

  • Pound the meat well for best tenderness.
  • Do not skip browning the steak. It adds deep flavor.
  • Cook on low heat for soft meat.
  • Add carrots or mushrooms for extra vegetables.
  • If sauce is thick, add a little more broth.
  • Taste and adjust salt before serving.
