Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup sour cream

  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the Frosting:

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans optional

Instructions
 

Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan lightly. This step ensures the cake does not stick and bakes evenly from all sides.

Mix Dry Ingredients

  • Take a large bowl and add flour, sugar, baking soda and salt. Mix everything well using a whisk. This helps combine ingredients evenly before adding wet ingredients.

Prepare Butter Mixture

  • In a saucepan, add butter and water. Heat until the butter melts completely. Do not boil. Pour this warm mixture into the dry ingredients and mix gently.

Add Wet Ingredients

  • Add sour cream, eggs and vanilla extract into the mixture. Mix everything until smooth and lump-free. Do not overmix, or the cake texture may become dense.

Bake the Cake

  • Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Spread evenly using a spatula. Bake for about 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Make the Frosting

  • In a saucepan, melt butter and add milk. Remove from heat and mix in powdered sugar and vanilla. Stir until smooth. Add pecans if you like extra crunch.

Frost the Cake

  • Pour the warm frosting over the hot cake. Spread evenly so it covers the surface. Let it set for some time before slicing and serving.
