Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes 28 ounces
  • 1 can tomato sauce 15 ounces
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes optional
  • 1 cup water or beef broth

Instructions

Heat the oil

  • Add olive oil to a large pot over medium heat. Let it warm gently so the onion and garlic cook evenly without burning.

Cook onion and garlic

  • Add chopped onion and garlic to the pot. Stir slowly until soft and fragrant, letting the natural sweetness come out nicely.

Brown the meat

  • Add ground beef or sausage and break it apart. Cook until browned fully, stirring often so there are no large clumps anywhere.

Drain extra fat

  • If there is too much grease in the pot, carefully drain it. This helps the sauce taste cleaner and keeps it from feeling heavy.

Add tomatoes and paste

  • Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce and tomato paste. Mix everything well so the meat and sauce combine into one rich base.

Add seasoning and liquid

  • Add sugar, basil, oregano, salt, pepper and red pepper flakes. Pour in water or broth and stir until smooth and even.

Simmer the sauce

  • Lower the heat and let it simmer slowly. Stir sometimes while it cooks so nothing sticks to the bottom or burns quietly.

Adjust taste and thickness

  • Taste the sauce and adjust seasonings if needed. If too thick, add water. If thin, simmer longer to thicken naturally.

Serve the sauce

  • Serve over hot spaghetti or any pasta you love. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top for extra flavor and simple happy comfort.

Notes

  • Simmer longer for deeper flavor
  • Use sausage for stronger taste
  • Add fresh basil at the end
  • Sugar helps balance tomato acidity
  • Freeze leftovers for busy days
