Ingredients

  • ¼ cup butter
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • ½ cup finely chopped cooked chicken or sausage optional

Instructions

Melt the butter

  • Place a saucepan over medium heat. Add butter and let it melt completely.

Make the roux

  • Add flour to the melted butter. Stir constantly until it turns light brown and smells nutty.

Add the broth

  • Slowly pour in beef broth and chicken broth. Keep stirring to avoid lumps.

Mix in soy sauce

  • Add soy sauce for a deep, rich flavor. It gives the gravy a nice color too.

Add spices

  • Mix in garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, salt, and cayenne. Stir well.

Simmer the gravy

  • Let the gravy cook on low heat for about 10 minutes until thick.

Add meat (optional)

  • Add finely chopped chicken or sausage for extra taste like the Popeyes version.

Check the texture

  • If it’s too thick, add a bit more broth. If too thin, cook longer.

Strain the gravy (optional)

  • For a smooth texture, strain it before serving.

Serve and enjoy

  • Pour over mashed potatoes, chicken, or biscuits and enjoy the rich flavor.

Notes

  • Stir constantly while cooking to avoid lumps.
  • Use both beef and chicken broth for that rich Popeyes taste.
  • Adding soy sauce makes the gravy dark and flavorful.
  • For extra taste, add small bits of cooked sausage or chicken.
  • Always taste and adjust salt before serving.
