Ingredients

  • 2 pounds russet potatoes peeled and cut into chunks
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional: 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder for extra flavor
  • Optional: 1/4 cup chopped chives for garnish

Instructions

Prepare the Potatoes

  • Peel and cut potatoes into even chunks. This ensures they cook evenly. Rinse under cold water to remove excess starch before boiling.

Boil the Potatoes

  • Place potatoes in a pot and cover with water. Add 1 teaspoon salt. Bring to a boil and cook for 15–20 minutes until tender.

Drain and Mash

  • Drain the cooked potatoes. Return them to the pot. Mash with a potato masher or electric mixer until smooth and lump-free.

Heat Butter and Cream

  • In a small saucepan, heat butter, heavy cream and milk until butter melts. Do not boil. This mixture adds richness and creaminess to the potatoes.

Combine and Mix

  • Pour the warm butter and cream into mashed potatoes. Stir gently until smooth and creamy. Add garlic powder if desired. Adjust salt and pepper to taste.

Serve and Garnish

  • Spoon the mashed potatoes into a serving bowl. Sprinkle chopped chives on top if using. Serve hot with your favorite main dish.

Notes

  • Use russet potatoes for a light, fluffy texture.
  • Do not overmix to avoid gummy potatoes.
  • Warm the cream and butter before adding to potatoes.
  • Mash potatoes while hot for smooth consistency.
  • Taste and adjust seasoning before serving.
