Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • ½ cup warm milk
  • ¼ cup butter melted
  • 1 egg

For Savory Filling:

  • ½ pound cooked sausage crumbled
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese

For Sweet Filling:

  • ½ cup fruit jam or preserves
  • ¼ cup cream cheese softened

For Brushing:

  • 1 egg beaten (for golden tops)

Instructions

Activate the Yeast

  • In a small saucepan, warm milk slightly. Stir in sugar and yeast. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.

Prepare the Dough

  • In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add melted butter, egg, and yeast mixture. Mix until a soft dough forms.

Knead the Dough

  • Knead on a lightly floured surface for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Let Dough Rise

  • Place dough in a greased bowl. Cover with a towel. Let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Prepare Fillings

  • While dough rises, cook sausage and crumble. Prepare fruit jam and cream cheese for sweet kolaches.

Shape the Kolaches

  • Punch down dough. Roll into a ½-inch thick rectangle. Cut into 3×3 inch squares.

Add Filling

  • Place 1–2 teaspoons of filling in the center of each square. Fold edges slightly to hold filling.

Place on Baking Sheet

  • Line baking sheet with parchment paper. Arrange filled dough pieces, leaving space between them.

Brush with Egg

  • Brush tops of kolaches with beaten egg for a golden, shiny finish.

Bake Kolaches

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake 18–20 minutes until golden brown.

Cool and Serve

  • Remove from oven. Let cool slightly. Serve warm for best flavor.

Notes

  • Use warm milk to activate yeast properly.
  • Don’t overfill kolaches to avoid spilling during baking.
  • Brush with egg for shiny, golden tops.
  • Try different fillings like ham and cheese or fruit jam.
  • Allow dough to rise fully for fluffy texture.
