Ingredients

For the Onion:

  • 1 large sweet onion
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • Oil for frying as needed

For the Dipping Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon horseradish
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  • Prepare the Onion: Peel the onion and cut a small base. Make vertical cuts without slicing through. Soak in ice water for 30 minutes.
  • Mix Dry Ingredients: In a bowl, mix flour, cornstarch, salt, paprika, garlic powder, black pepper, and cayenne.
  • Prepare Wet Mixture: Whisk buttermilk and egg in another bowl until smooth.
  • Coat the Onion: Dip the onion into the wet mix, covering it fully. Then, coat evenly in the dry mix.
  • Heat the Oil: Heat oil to 375°F in a deep fryer or pot.
  • Fry the Onion: Lower the onion into the oil with tongs. Fry for 3-4 minutes until golden and crispy.
  • Drain and Serve: Remove and place on paper towels to drain oil.
  • Make the Sauce: Stir together all the ingredients in a bowl to make the sauce.
  • Serve Hot: Put the crispy onion on a plate and serve with sauce.

Notes

  • Use a large, sweet onion for better flavor.
  • Keep the oil at 375°F for perfect crispiness.
  • Soak the onion in ice water to help the petals open.
  • Double-dip for extra crunch in the coating.
  • Change the spice level to your taste.
