Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup almond milk or any plant milk
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Oil for frying vegetable or canola
  • Powdered sugar for topping

Instructions

Step 1: Make vegan buttermilk

  • Mix almond milk with apple cider vinegar. Let it sit for 5 minutes. This creates a light texture.

Step 2: Combine dry ingredients

  • In a large bowl, whisk flour, sugar, baking powder and salt together.

Step 3: Add wet ingredients

  • Pour in the vegan buttermilk and vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth. The batter should be slightly thick but pourable.

Step 4: Heat the oil

  • Pour oil into a deep pan, about 2 inches deep. Heat to 350°F (175°C).

Step 5: Fry the funnel cake

  • Pour batter into a funnel or squeeze bottle. Swirl the batter into the hot oil in circles. Fry each side for 1–2 minutes until golden brown.

Step 6: Drain and cool

  • Use tongs to remove the cake. Place on paper towels to drain extra oil.

Step 7: Serve and enjoy

  • Dust with powdered sugar while warm. You can also add fruit, syrup, or vegan chocolate sauce.

Notes

  • Make sure the oil is hot before frying.
  • Don’t pour too much batter; keep the layers thin.
  • Let the funnel cake cool slightly before adding sugar.
  • Try using oat milk or soy milk for a richer flavor.
  • Add cinnamon to the batter for extra warmth.
  • Use a squeeze bottle for better control while pouring.
  • Serve immediately for the crispiest texture.
